10 Common Myths About Wigs

Wearing a wig is something that many people may not know much about unless they have personal experience with wigs. New wig wearers, or those with little knowledge about wigs often have many misconceptions where wigs are concerned. Here are a few common wig wearing myths and the real truth behind them.

#1 Caring for a wig is hard

When you're armed with the correct knowledge, caring for a wig can be just as (and often easier) than caring for your real hair. It just requires a different process and different products. We include free wig care instructions with each of our wigs, and offer a variety of wig care products to make washing and styling your wig a breeze. Many wig wearers also find the videos in our Wig Resources Library particularly helpful.

#2 A wig won't fit right on my head

Finding a wig that fits correctly starts with knowing your head measurement. You can find an easy to follow guide to measuring your head, as well as a demonstration video in our Wig Buying Guide. Some wigs offer slight size adjustment with tabs on the interior of the cap that can help to customize your fit.

#3 Wigs are hot and uncomfortable

Depending on the particular wig that you select, certain wig styles offer different types of cap construction and wefting to help air flow through the cap, keeping your head cool. This type of ventilation creates breathability within the cap.

Wearing a bamboo wig cap underneath your wig can also help to keep your head cool because the bamboo fibers of the wig cap wick away moisture and help keep heat away from the scalp. Wearing a wig cap can also help to prevent any oil build up from occurring on the inside of the wig itself, helping to keep it fresher longer.

#4 Wigs are not versatile enough

Wigs come in many different shapes and styles. Each style offers it's own benefits and drawbacks. However, women who require versatility in their style can definitely find that in wigs that are made from human hair or heat friendly synthetic material. These wig types can be styled with heated tools such as curling irons, straighteners, or hot rollers to achieve different looks.

Different types of wig caps can also contribute to the overall versatility of a wig. Monofilament cap wigs allow for the part of the hair to be changed, while lace front wigs create a hair line that is natural looking enough to pull the hair back away from the face to change up the style.

#5 My wig will come off when I bend over or am outside and the wind blows too hard

As long as your wig is properly fitted, this should not be the case. Women who have their own hair can also use toupee clips to attach the inside of the wig to any existing hair.

#6 Human hair wigs are better than synthetic wigs

Each type of wig fiber has it's own unique benefits. Most synthetic wigs are made with quality technology to ensure that the fibers hold up and stay looking great over time. Synthetic wigs are also pre-styled and don't require as much work as human hair wigs to achieve the look that you want.

#7 Wearing a wig will prevent my hair from growing back

Wearing a wig will not inhibit hair growth. The cells that allow hair to grow will still be able to function underneath your skin while wearing a wig. If you're worried about damaging hair that is growing back out underneath your wig, wearing a wig cap can help to protect the hair that is growing in.

#8 Wigs are all expensive

There are many affordable options available for various budgets. We offer complimentary wig consultations to help you select the right wig for your budget. Taking advantage of this type of consultation will help ensure that you get the most for your money.

#9 Everyone will know that I'm wearing a wig

Advances in wig making technology help to ensure that this is not the case. Quality synthetic fibers are not starkly shiny and unnatural looking as they once were. Wig caps are now made with wefting that allows for natural movement and monofilament caps can even help give the appearance of hair growing naturally from the scalp.

Making sure that your wig is properly fitted, tailoring the cut to your face shape, and choosing a color that looks natural against your skin tone are all ways to help make sure that your wig looks as natural as possible.

#10 Wigs are hard to put on

Putting on a wig is actually quite simple. When putting your wig on for the first time, you may have to make some adjustments, but once you have it adjusted, you should be able to easily slip your wig on with each wear.
